Planning on running a marathon or half marathon?   Target the October 15th Run for the Reef as an interim goal or plan it as a training run.   The Galloway Training program in Navarre can help you train.  They will be holding a kickoff run on June 5th at Run With It in Fort Walton Beach.  The group has trained runners to coach and help you every step of the way.  You can download their information flyer here.

Memorial day weekend is a great time to visit the beach and get some snorkeling in.  Reefs of the same design as those planned for Navarre are already deployed off Pensacola Beach.  This YouTube video provides a view of what the Navarre reefs will look like when deployed.

They are located approximately 1.5 miles east of Portofino Towers on Pensacola beach.  The GPS coordinates for the closest parking lot is  N30.348000,  W87.053787.     The reefs are just to the east of the parking log.  There is a cut in the dunes near the entrance, and you can unload your gear there , then park in the lot.   The reef is marked with a bouy.   There are two poles on the beach which you can use to line yourself up for direction.   The first structure is between the first and second sand bar.

The Marine Sanctuary Committee selected the Run for the Reef race shirt logo this evening after viewing several drawings submitted. Kelley Grace developed the selected logo. Many other artists also submitted entries including artists in Mrs. Dahlgren’s Holley Navarre Middle School Art Class. The Committee was well impressed with all of the art submissions and very much appreciates the efforts of all the artists that prepared artwork. We’ll display all the submissions at the October 15th Run.

Congratulations and thank you to Kelley Grace for an outstanding piece of art that many will be wearing around town come October.

PRESS RELEASE

May 17, 2011:

The Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary Committee (NBMSC), a program of the Navarre Chamber Foundation, is pleased to announce that the Navarre Beach Leaseholders and Residents Association (NBLRA) has voted to become a Prime Sponsor of the 3rd Annual Run For The Reef 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run on October 15, 2011. The Run For The Reef 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run benefits the NBMSC’s mission to bring shore-accessible snorkeling and diving reefs to both the Sound side and Gulf side waters off of beautiful Navarre Beach Park. The NBLRA’s generous $1000 gift, which will be presented to the NBMSC at 10a.m. on Saturday, May 21st at the Navarre Beach Marine Science Center, pushes the pre-race sponsorships for the Run For The Reef to record levels, insuring that this year’s event will be the most successful fund raising event ever to benefit the NBMSC. With the recent announcement of funding commitments for the actual construction of the reefs from Santa Rosa County and the TDC, the NBMSC looks forward to a point in the very near future where Navarre Beach Is Snorkelicious!! For more information on the Run For The Reef (including Race Registration forms) and the NBMSC’s mission, please visit our website at: www.navarrebeachmarinesanctuary.com.

The Marine Sanctuary Committee booth at this year’s Fun Fest was the place to be. Nancy Sandler (Community Awareness Coordinator) and her band of merry volunteers made a big splash telling visitors about the recent program status and providing information on what’s to come. T-shirts and bumper stickers were snapped up in record numbers and over $200 was raised to aid program improvements and reef maintenance once the reefs are installed. Additionally – twenty new volunteers signed up to help Make Navarre Snorkelicious!

On May 7th Nancy and company were at it again – this time at the Sunset Stampede, handing out Run for the Reef registration forms and providing information on the reef program to the over large crowd at the annual evening 5K headquartered at Juana’s.

Thanks to all the volunteers that helped man the booth at these events!
