All State and Federal permits have now been granted to Santa Rosa County to clear the way for an expansion of the current Gulf Side Snorkeling reefs to three times the current size. This makes possible, the addition of 60 reefs to the current 30 reefs. One set of 30 additional reefs will be on the East side of the current reef site, and the other set of 30 will be on the west side.
The Gulf Side Snorkeling reef expansion is one component of a project (SR-26) submitted into the NRDA funding process which distributes funding stemming from the BP Oil Spill related monies along the gulf coast. A separate project (SR-27) currently in the permitting phase is a larger (1 mile by2 mile) near shore reef zone approximately 1.2 miles offshore.
